One who is approaching shore—the compass has collapsed and I search for an oasis

乌克兰诗人Vasyl Holoborodko写过“I Fly Away in the Shape of a Dandelion Seed”, 该诗被印发在《Words for War: New Poems from Ukraine》里,2017年出版。

The first lesson of the dandelion comes from the test flight of spring. We extracted flight from plants, puffing air into child-like cheeks, in celebration of a diaspora. If diaspora means a prouder parade between air and land, the hospitality of the land, and the parachutes light as gossamer … Dandelions were introduced to the Americas and Australia from their native Eurasia. Vigorous growers, they thrive in these new habitats; few remember they are not  Indigenous species. Often seen as weeds, they are ridded for the beauty of gardens and lawns.

On the meteorological map, tropical cyclones lift the fluffy, seemingly harmless seeds. According to the treatise on traditional Chinese medicine: dandelion, a sweet, slightly bitter, and cooling herb.  So far, it has been used to name four tropical cyclones in the Pacific Ocean: One brought heavy floods to Taiwan, One hit Manila during its hostage crisis, One knocked down a tree onto a train station in central Tokyo and suspended the service on the Tokyo Loop Line, causing power outage in 100, 000 households across Japan; One was named by North Korea.

Ukrainian poet Vasyl Holoborodko penned the poem I Fly Away in the Shape of a Dandelion Seed, Which is collected in the 2017 anthology Words for War: New Poems from Ukraine. In 1965, the poet was fired by his university for his refusal to collaborate with the KGB,  And his works were banned by the Soviet Union in the next 20 years.  He was an active participant of the “Kyiv School of Poetry,” And is now living a reclusive life in Luhansk in eastern Ukraine. On February 21, 2022, Russia recognized the Luhansk People’s Republic as an independent state and deployed troops in the area. On February 24, 2024, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The war broke out, Rapidly escalating into Europe's largest conflict since World War II. As of May, Luhansk remains engulfed in ongoing warfare.

“I know that from here you cannot escape by plane — you have to be able to fly on your own. […] So I’m forced to take flight in the form of a dandelion seed: I leave the house in search of wide open spaces, past my garden and into the street and float toward a direction very remote —  now the wind gusts  will carry me away, away!” The poet wrote.

Dandelion is native to Eurasia and often regarded as a weed. It reproduces asexually, the edges of its leaves are shaped like a lion’s pointed teeth. The English name “Dandelion” is derived from the French “dent-de-lion,” meaning “lion’s tooth.” In the Language of Flowers, it stands for “I pray for your happiness from afar.”
