Fold: verb and noun.   In Deleuze’s interpretation, the fold is an aesthetic of concealment and intention.   In the physical, real-world definition, a folded object acquires spatiality, or at least it undergoes a change in its spatial coordinates. A folded piece of paper can stand upright on a flat surface: its original two-dimensional state becomes three dimensional, acquiring volume. For this reason, folding is also an architectural strategy. Folding can leave a mark or “site of connection,” and since it entails pressure and extreme compression, folding itself is a compound mode of existence. Extended to the nonphysical realm, we can speak of the folding of concepts or the compression of multilateral ideas. But ideas are not disconnected and groundless; on the contrary, there will necessarily be sites of connection. What’s interesting is that ideological folding entails absorbing diverse opinions that are similar yet different, while books, physical carriers for knowledge, are also the product of folding. At present our lives, too, exist in a folded state, the real and the virtual advancing in parallel, with thinking more abundant at the borders between narratives.
